Learn more about Kirkwood
Pros
- Adventurous in-bound terrain
- Fewer crowds
- Deepest snow in all of Tahoe
Cons
- 45-minute drive south of Lake Tahoe, crossing over two passes
Overall
Kirkwood is located south of Heavenly and offers Lake Tahoe’s most challenging skiing arguably. Kirkwood has the highest base elevation and boasts the deepest, driest snow on its double black diamond terrain. Experts crave Kirkwood's serious steep and deep including the legendary “Wall.” But Kirkwood has lower mountain terrain to satisfy families on their 2,300 ac. A modest base lodge and friendly local crowd are different than more ski resort-esque Heavenly, Squaw and Alpine and Northstar around Lake Tahoe. Kirkwood is now a sister resort to Vail and part of the Vail's Epic Pass, so you can combine a Lake Tahoe trip with other Vail Resorts, Heavenly and Northstar.

Great local mountain - not as easy a drive as Heavenly or Squaw since you have to go in more and on one lane roads, but worth it! Beautiful drive to a smaller resort, with tons of terrain, a good backside, and great snow. Not as many catwalks as Heavenly which is nice and not as crowded either. Good terrain for more advanced folks. Not as much... Moreadvanced skier

About 45 minutes outside of Lake Tahoe lies Kirkwood Ski Area. To pull up and see the big open terrain of the mountain is an amazing sight but once you get to the top is where the fun begins. Steep terrain, big drops, tree runs everywhere. Kirkwood always keeps the fun going and even in the beginning and end of the season they keep everything... Moreadvanced snowboarder

I loved kirkwood. I mostly did blue slopes, a few green and one black. The powder is excellent and the slopes are spacious. There's lots of room to go a little off piste into trees. The variety in difficulty is also nice, my friends enjoyed the black and double blacks. I'd definitely go again!... Moreintermediate skier

Can be difficult to navigate, I know the layout and still occasionally get stuck trying to get back to a lift. It can also be hard to get to after a storm, and there’s not much of a village. That said, it’s got some awesome, difficult terrain that’s great for advanced skiers and riders. The resort feels very old fashioned and more ski oriented.... Moreadvanced snowboarder

I've skied almost all of the ski resorts in the Tahoe area. Kirkwood was far and away my favorite. The snow, the runs, everything about the experience was phenomenal. The first time I skied there I was newly engaged - I'll never forget that day! I can't wait to have the chance to go back!... Moreintermediate skier

plenty of rock drops and a long cornice. terrain at kirkwild is on the extreme side. lifts move fast and I never stood in a line, on a Monday. The staff, especially liftys, seem genuinely happy to be there. Could use more dining facilities. byo water.... Moreexpert snowboarder

Kirkwood is fantastic. Snowfall depths in Tahoe are second to none. Location is off the beaten path, so the crowds are generally lighter than the other resorts. My kids and I ski Kirkwood 10-15 times a season, with terrain - beginner to expert - for everybody.... Moreexpert skier
